Never Stay Loyal (self.sysadmin)
Here's my view on IT employment:

IT is very much in demand. Our field has one of the lowest rates of unemployment (5%). However, we also have one of the highest rates of employee turnover (25%). Why's that? Because the only way to get a serious pay raise is to jump to a new company.

If you think about how IT is generally viewed by businesses you might also reconsider showing loyalty to a company. Unless you're in the business of IT staffing, IT doesn't generate revenue. We are cost overhead. Think about that every time management fights you on your IT budget, system upgrade costs, new hires, and raises. Business would much rather use profit on something sexy like sales, marketing, or product development.

So, what do we do? We take our IT experience, throw it on a resume, and we leave for a new company.

If you're working for the same company for more than 2-3 years and not getting more than a 3% annual salary increase, you are not only actively losing spending power to inflation (2%), but you're denying yourself an opportunity to get a likely 10-15% raise just by switching companies.

Obviously it's important to note that you should never burn bridges. You would be surprised how connected IT management is between companies in a given local. Not to mention a quality boss is a quality reference. That being said, I've never had a boss that took me leaving for better pay the wrong way.

Bottom line in IT: Start shopping your resume out every 2 years. At best you realize the grass is greener on the other side (i.e. better management, better QoL, better pay, better experience, cert sponsorship, etc.).

At worst you got a raise and the experience of interviewing and you just gotta stick it out for a bit before you leave again.
